Author Guidelines

Scope

Before submitting, please read our Aims and Scope to make sure your work fits JHCS's focus on cardiovascular science. We publish Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Case Reports and Short Communications.

Authorship

Authorship follows the ICMJE criteria. Each author must have made a substantial contribution to the conception, design, analysis or interpretation of the work; drafted or critically revised it; approved the final version; and agreed to be accountable for all of it.

Preparing Your Manuscript

  • Write in clear, grammatically correct English
  • Prepare the manuscript for double-blind review, with author names and affiliations in a separate file from the main text
  • Give an ORCID iD for the corresponding author, and for other authors where possible
  • Use the standard structure: Title, Abstract (structured or unstructured as suits the article type), Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion and References

Required Statements

Every submission must include:

  • A Conflict of Interest (Competing Interests) statement
  • A Data Availability Statement
  • A Funding statement disclosing all sources of support
  • An Ethical Approval and Informed Consent statement, where people or animals were involved
  • An AI Use Declaration naming any generative AI tool used

Reporting Guidelines

Please follow the relevant reporting guideline for your study design, such as CONSORT for randomised trials, STROBE for observational studies, PRISMA for systematic reviews and CARE for case reports.

Originality

All manuscripts are checked with iThenticate before peer review, under the Plagiarism Policy.

Peer Review

Submissions receive double-blind review from at least two independent reviewers. First decisions usually arrive within 12–14 weeks.

Copyright and Licensing

Accepted articles are published under CC BY 4.0. You keep your copyright, and there is no copyright transfer agreement to sign.

Article Processing Charges

There is no Article Processing Charge. Journal of Heart and Cardiovascular Science charges authors nothing at any stage of submission, peer review or publication.

References

Cite datasets, software and earlier work accurately and completely, with DOIs wherever they exist.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Before you submit, please check that your manuscript meets every item below. Submissions that miss any of them will be returned to you before peer review, which only delays your work.

Scope and Originality

  • The manuscript fits the journal's Aims and Scope and is one of our article types: Original Research Article, Review Article, Case Report or Short Communication.
  • It has not been published before and is not under consideration by another journal. Any related preprint or conference abstract is disclosed in the cover letter.
  • The text is original and all sources are properly cited, in line with the Plagiarism Policy. We screen every manuscript with iThenticate.

Preparing for Double-Blind Review

  • Author names, affiliations and contact details are in a separate title page file, not in the main manuscript.
  • Self-citations are written in the third person, and file properties do not reveal the authors' identities.
  • An ORCID iD is given for the corresponding author, and for co-authors where possible.

Manuscript Content

  • The manuscript follows the Author Guidelines: title, abstract, keywords, main text and references in the standard structure.
  • The appropriate reporting guideline has been followed (CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA or CARE, for example), with the completed checklist uploaded where relevant.
  • All tables and figures are numbered, labelled and cited in the text.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness, with DOIs wherever they exist.

Required Statements

  • A Conflict of Interest (Competing Interests) statement, including "none" where that applies
  • A Funding statement disclosing every source of support
  • A Data Availability Statement
  • An AI Use Declaration naming any generative AI tool used and for what
  • An Ethical Approval and Informed Consent statement naming the approving committee and reference number, for any research involving people or animals
  • Written consent for publication from the patient, for case reports. Please do not upload the signed form itself.
  • A trial registration number, for clinical trials

Confidentiality and Permissions

  • No names, initials, hospital numbers, exact dates, locations or images that could identify a participant appear unless that person has given written consent.
  • Permission has been obtained to reuse any figures, tables, photos, datasets or other material that the authors did not create.
  • Every listed author meets the ICMJE authorship criteria and has approved the submitted version.

Publication Costs

  • There is no Article Processing Charge and no other fee: publishing is free for authors (see the Article Processing Charges page).

Copyright Notice

Copyright

Authors who publish in JHCS keep the copyright in their work. You do not transfer copyright to the journal or the publisher. Instead, you grant JHCS a non-exclusive licence to publish, distribute and archive the article in its published form.

Licence

Every JHCS article is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). It allows unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original authors and source are properly credited.

Under this licence, authors and anyone else may:

  • Read, download and share the article free of charge
  • Copy, distribute and transmit it in any medium or format
  • Adapt, remix, transform and build on it for any purpose, including commercial purposes
  • Reuse figures, tables and text in new work, with proper citation

Authors' Rights

The licence does not limit the authors' right to:

  • Post the published article on personal websites, in institutional repositories or on preprint servers, with a link to the published version
  • Make separate, non-exclusive arrangements to distribute the published version, as long as its first publication in JHCS is acknowledged

Third-Party Material

If your manuscript includes material you did not create, such as figures, tables or long quotations, and it is not already under a compatible open licence, you are responsible for obtaining permission to reuse it. Always give proper attribution.

No Copyright Transfer Agreement

JHCS does not ask authors to sign a copyright transfer agreement. By submitting a manuscript and having it accepted, you agree to publish it under CC BY 4.0 as described above.
