Microgrids have shifted, over roughly two decades, from diesel-genset-based islanding schemes toward architectures built primarily around variable renewable generation, a change that forces resilience -- the ability to keep serving load through storms, wildfires, and other extreme events -- to be engineered alongside renewable integration rather than treated as a separate design problem. This article synthesizes the literature on how those two goals are pursued together, tracing the foundational choice between AC, DC, and hybrid microgrid architectures; the hierarchical droop-based control structures that let inverter-dominated generation operate stably in both grid-connected and islanded modes; the forecasting, storage, and demand-response resources used to manage renewable variability at the timescales it actually occurs; and the sectionalization and networked-microgrid strategies that extend single-site resilience into a distribution-system-level capability. We give particular weight to documented test-bed and campus-scale deployment experience, including the U.S. Department of Energy's early microgrid initiative and the Illinois Institute of Technology's DC microgrid case study, as a check on how much of this architectural consensus is field-validated rather than purely conceptual. Read together, the evidence supports resilient, renewable-integrated microgrids as a coherent and increasingly well-evidenced design pattern, while leaving field-measured resilience outcomes from real extreme events, control-hierarchy scalability under heterogeneous resource mixes, and DC/hybrid interconnection standards as an open research and engineering agenda.
